Understanding the Condition

What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic skin condition affecting the hair follicles and oil glands. It manifests as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts — most commonly on the face, chest, and back. While it is most prevalent in teenagers, adult acne is increasingly common, particularly in women. At The Shiny Touch, Paula takes a clinical approach to acne management, combining professional treatments with lifestyle and skincare guidance to reduce breakouts, calm inflammation, and protect against the scarring that can develop when acne is left untreated.

Common Causes

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with dead skin cells and sebum (oil). Bacteria — particularly Cutibacterium acnes — thrive in this environment and trigger the inflammation that causes spots. Key contributing factors include hormonal fluctuations (especially androgens), genetics, stress, diet, certain medications, and incorrect skincare. Using pore-clogging products or failing to cleanse properly can also exacerbate breakouts.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can professional treatments clear acne completely?

Professional treatments significantly reduce active acne and prevent new breakouts in the majority of patients. While complete long-term clearance depends on underlying causes (e.g. hormonal), combining in-clinic treatments with a tailored skincare routine produces excellent, sustained results for most people.

Is acne just a teenage problem?

Absolutely not. Adult acne affects around 15% of women and a smaller percentage of men. Hormonal changes from the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, and stress are common triggers in adult life. Our treatments are suitable for all ages.

Will treating acne stop me getting scars?

Early, effective treatment of active acne is the single most important thing you can do to prevent scarring. The longer inflammation persists and the deeper the lesions, the higher the scar risk. Prompt professional intervention dramatically reduces this risk.

Can I have treatments if I am using prescribed acne medication?

It depends on the medication. Some oral retinoids (like Roaccutane) require a waiting period before certain procedures. Paula will review your full medical history and current medications at your consultation to ensure we plan safe, appropriate treatments.
