Understanding the Condition

What is Perioral Lines?

Perioral lines — often called smoker's lines or lipstick lines — are the fine vertical creases that form on the upper lip and around the mouth. They develop with age and repeated lip movement, and can cause lipstick to bleed and the mouth to look older. Paula softens perioral lines with a combination of skin boosters, gentle resurfacing, and precise fine-line filler to restore a smooth lip border.

Common Causes

Perioral lines are caused by repeated pursing of the lips, natural collagen and volume loss around the mouth, sun exposure, and — in some — smoking. The skin of the upper lip is thin and highly mobile, so it shows early creasing as elastin declines.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best treatment for lines around the mouth?

There is no single answer — the best approach depends on line depth. Superficial lines respond well to skin boosters and Profhilo, which hydrate and stimulate collagen. Deeper, set lines may need a small amount of fine dermal filler. A light lip flip with anti-wrinkle injections can also relax the muscle that pulls the lip inward.

Can these lines be prevented?

Early hydration treatments, daily SPF, and not smoking all slow the formation of perioral lines. Starting collagen-stimulating treatments before lines become deeply etched gives the best long-term result.

Will treatment make my lips look fake?

No — the goal here is to smooth the skin around the lips, not to inflate them. Paula uses conservative, natural-looking techniques focused on texture and the lip border.
