Calm persistent redness, reduce visible vessels, and strengthen the skin barrier for a clearer, more comfortable complexion.
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and in some subtypes, acne-like pustules and thickening of the skin. It most commonly affects the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin, and tends to flare in response to specific triggers. While there is currently no cure, rosacea can be very effectively managed to reduce redness, visible vessels, and improve skin comfort and appearance. At The Shiny Touch, Paula works to calm the skin, strengthen its barrier function, and reduce visible redness through targeted treatments and expert skincare guidance.
The precise cause of rosacea is not yet fully understood, but research points to a combination of immune dysregulation, vascular dysfunction, and an overgrowth of Demodex mites on the skin. Genetic predisposition is significant — rosacea runs in families and is more common in fair-skinned individuals of Celtic and Northern European heritage. Key triggers that cause flushing and flare-ups include sun exposure, hot drinks, alcohol (particularly red wine), spicy food, temperature extremes, stress, and certain skincare ingredients. Each person's triggers are individual.
Paula will assess your skin, discuss your concerns, and recommend the most effective treatment plan for lasting results.

Currently there is no cure for rosacea, but with appropriate management it can be very well controlled. Professional treatments, combined with trigger avoidance and a rosacea-appropriate skincare routine, can dramatically reduce persistent redness, visible vessels, and flare frequency. Many patients achieve extended periods of remission.
Yes — with the right treatments and appropriate protocols. Some treatments that work well for other skin conditions can aggravate rosacea. Paula has specific experience with rosacea-prone skin and will select only treatments that are safe and beneficial for this condition, avoiding anything that could cause a flare.
Common irritants for rosacea-prone skin include alcohol, fragrance, witch hazel, menthol, eucalyptus, peppermint, and high-concentration acids. Retinoic acid can also be problematic for some. Paula will advise on a rosacea-safe skincare routine at your consultation, including gentle cleansing, barrier-strengthening moisturisers, and daily SPF (mineral SPF is generally better tolerated).
Yes — diet is one of the most common trigger categories for rosacea. Hot drinks, spicy foods, and alcohol (particularly red wine, beer, and spirits) are well-established triggers for many people. A food and symptom diary can be a useful tool for identifying your personal dietary triggers.
