Understanding the Condition

What is Facial Volume Loss?

Volume loss is one of the most significant drivers of facial ageing. As we get older, the fat pads that give the face its youthful, three-dimensional shape gradually diminish and descend. This leads to flattening of the cheeks, hollowing under the eyes, deepening of the nasolabial folds, and a loss of definition in the jawline. The face can take on a tired, gaunt, or even sad appearance. At The Shiny Touch, Paula uses carefully placed dermal filler to rebuild this lost volume, restore facial contour, and create a naturally refreshed, lifted appearance.

Common Causes

Facial volume loss is caused primarily by the natural ageing process. From the mid-twenties, subcutaneous fat pads gradually reduce in size and shift downward due to the effects of gravity and ligament laxity. Simultaneously, the underlying bone structure subtly changes — the cheekbones and orbital rim can lose density over time, reducing the structural support for overlying soft tissue. Rapid weight loss, high levels of sun exposure, smoking, and chronic stress can all accelerate this process, leading to premature volume depletion.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Will filler make my face look "done" or unnatural?

Natural results come from restoring what has been lost rather than adding where it was never there. Paula's approach is always to use the minimum effective amount of filler to achieve a refreshed, lifted look — never overfilled or distorted. The goal is for people to think you look well-rested, not to wonder what you've had done.

What is the difference between dermal filler and Sculptra?

Dermal filler (hyaluronic acid) replaces volume immediately upon injection. Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) works differently — it stimulates your own collagen production over 3 months, creating a gradual, very natural volumising effect that lasts up to 2 years. Paula will recommend the right approach based on your anatomy and goals.

How much filler is typically needed?

This varies significantly between individuals depending on the degree of volume loss and the areas being treated. Paula will assess your facial structure at consultation and recommend the appropriate volume. The principle is always conservative — it is easier to add more than to remove too much.

Is there any downtime with facial filler?

Most clients experience some mild redness, swelling, or bruising for 24–72 hours following treatment, though many have no significant downtime at all. Paula will advise on aftercare and recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment.
