Understanding the Condition

What is Tear Trough Treatment?

The tear trough is the groove or hollow that forms beneath the lower eyelid, running from the inner corner of the eye towards the cheek. When this hollow is deep or has a dark shadow, it creates the impression of persistent tiredness, sadness, or ageing — regardless of how much sleep you get. This is one of the most requested areas for treatment at The Shiny Touch, and one of the most transformative. Paula specialises in precise, ultra-conservative tear trough treatment using specialist hyaluronic acid filler to restore lost volume, reduce the shadow, and brighten the under-eye area.

Common Causes

The tear trough hollow forms when volume is lost under the eye, revealing the orbital rim and creating a shadowed groove. The skin in this area is the thinnest on the face, making volume loss and dark circles particularly visible. Age-related fat atrophy beneath the lower eyelid, combined with descent of the cheek fat pad, progressively deepens the hollow. Some people have a naturally deep tear trough from a young age due to genetics. Dark circles within the hollow are compounded by the visibility of the orbicularis oculi muscle beneath thin skin, and by pigmentation in those with darker skin tones.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tear trough filler safe?

In expert hands, yes. The tear trough is one of the most technically demanding areas to treat due to the proximity of important vascular structures and the extremely thin, delicate skin. Paula uses a blunt-tipped cannula (rather than a sharp needle) for tear trough treatment, which significantly reduces the risk of bruising and vascular complications. She uses a premium, soft hyaluronic acid filler specifically designed for the periorbital area.

Will it look natural?

Natural results are paramount in this area. Over-treatment of the tear trough is immediately obvious — the goal is simply to soften the hollow and reduce the shadow, not to fill the area completely flat. Paula uses ultra-conservative volumes and assesses the result carefully as she works to ensure a natural, refreshed outcome.

What causes Tyndall effect and how is it avoided?

The Tyndall effect is a bluish discolouration that occurs when filler is placed too superficially beneath the thin under-eye skin. It is avoided by using the correct filler product (a very soft, low-density HA) and placing it at the appropriate depth. If it does occur, it is fully reversible with hyaluronidase enzyme.

Am I a suitable candidate for tear trough filler?

Not everyone is a suitable candidate — those with very thin skin, significant lower eyelid laxity, or prominent under-eye bags (caused by fat prolapse rather than volume loss) may be better served by alternative approaches or surgical assessment. Paula will assess your suitability honestly at consultation.
