Understanding the Condition

What is Hooded Eyelids?

Hooded eyelids occur when the brow descends and excess skin folds over the upper eyelid crease, partially or fully obscuring the eyelid. This can make the eyes appear smaller, heavier, and more tired — and can even affect the visual field in more pronounced cases. While surgical blepharoplasty is the definitive treatment for significant hooding, non-surgical options can achieve impressive lifting and opening effects without any incisions or recovery time. At The Shiny Touch, Paula uses strategic anti-wrinkle injections and filler to lift the brow and reduce the appearance of hooding.

Common Causes

Hooded eyelids can be either genetic (a feature present from birth or young adulthood) or the result of age-related brow and skin ptosis (drooping). As we age, the brow gradually descends due to the loss of skin elasticity and the atrophy of the forehead and brow fat pads. The skin of the upper eyelid also loses its elasticity and can begin to fold over the eyelid crease. Repeated downward pull of the glabellar muscles (frown muscles) also contributes to brow descent.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How does anti-wrinkle treatment lift the brow?

The frontalis muscle (forehead) is responsible for lifting the brow, while the glabellar and peri-orbital muscles pull it downward. By carefully relaxing the downward-pulling muscles while allowing the frontalis to continue working, Paula creates a net upward lift. Small amounts of filler can also be placed in the brow tail to support and define the lateral brow.

Who is a good candidate for non-surgical brow lifting?

Non-surgical brow lifting is most effective for mild to moderate brow descent and early hooding. Those with very significant skin excess over the upper eyelid are more likely to benefit from surgical assessment. Paula will be honest with you about what can realistically be achieved non-surgically.

Can this treatment improve vision affected by hooded lids?

In cases where the hooding is purely muscular (brow ptosis), anti-wrinkle treatment can modestly improve the visual field. However, if the hooding is primarily due to excess skin, surgical blepharoplasty may be the only way to achieve meaningful improvement in visual function.

Is there any risk of drooping eyelid after anti-wrinkle treatment?

Eyelid ptosis (drooping) is a rare but possible side effect if anti-wrinkle product migrates to the levator palpebrae muscle. Paula uses precise, conservative dosing and injection techniques specifically designed to minimise this risk. Her 2-week review allows any minor asymmetries to be assessed and adjusted.
