Understanding the Condition

What is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring is one of the most common concerns we treat at The Shiny Touch. When acne lesions heal, they can leave behind discolouration, textural irregularities, and depressed or raised scars that persist long after the active breakouts have resolved. These marks can significantly affect confidence and skin texture, but with the right treatments, dramatic improvement is absolutely achievable. Paula uses a combination of advanced resurfacing technologies to rebuild collagen, remodel scar tissue, and restore a smooth, even skin surface.

Common Causes

Acne scars form when inflamed acne lesions — particularly cysts and nodules — damage the surrounding skin tissue. As the skin heals, it produces collagen fibres to repair the wound. If too little collagen is produced, depressed (atrophic) scars appear; if too much, raised (hypertrophic) scars form. Picking or squeezing spots dramatically increases the risk of scarring. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), the flat dark marks left after acne, is technically not scarring but is often treated alongside true scars.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acne scars be completely removed?

Significant improvement — typically 50–70% — is realistic for most scar types. Complete removal is not always possible, but our treatments can dramatically reduce the appearance of scarring, smooth skin texture, and restore confidence. Multiple sessions give the best results.

Which treatment works best for acne scars?

Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling and CO2 laser resurfacing produce the most dramatic results for acne scarring. For milder scarring or darker skin tones, standard microneedling or skin booster treatments may be more appropriate. Paula will recommend the ideal approach at your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients require 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Paula will assess your scar type and severity and create a bespoke treatment plan at your initial consultation.

Is it safe to treat acne scars if I still have active acne?

Active acne should be controlled before beginning scar treatments. Paula can advise on managing active breakouts as part of your overall skin health plan, then progress to scar-resurfacing once the skin is stable.
