Understanding the Condition

What is Ageing Hands?

The hands are often one of the first areas to show visible signs of ageing, yet they are frequently overlooked in aesthetic treatment plans. As we age, the skin on the hands loses collagen, elastin, and subcutaneous fat, causing it to become thinner, looser, and more crepey. Tendons and veins become increasingly prominent, and sun-induced age spots accumulate on the dorsum (back of the hand). At The Shiny Touch, Paula offers targeted treatments to address all aspects of hand ageing — restoring volume, improving skin quality, and fading pigmentation.

Common Causes

Hand ageing is driven by the same intrinsic and extrinsic factors as facial ageing. Intrinsic ageing causes a gradual decline in collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production from the mid-twenties onwards. The dorsal skin of the hands is also very thin and has relatively few sebaceous glands, making it particularly vulnerable to dryness and UV damage. Years of sun exposure accelerate pigmentation and skin thinning, while repeated hand washing and exposure to cleaning products further compromise the skin barrier.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dermal filler in the hands safe?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler for hand rejuvenation is a well-established, safe procedure when performed by a trained practitioner. Paula uses premium HA fillers and applies them carefully to restore natural-looking volume. The hands have an excellent blood supply, so results are typically very natural and long-lasting.

How long does hand filler last?

Hand filler typically lasts 12–18 months. As the filler gradually metabolises, a top-up treatment will maintain the result. Skin boosters such as Profhilo last around 6 months and can be combined with filler for a comprehensive hand rejuvenation.

Can hand treatments be done at the same time as face treatments?

Absolutely. Many clients choose to treat their hands and face in the same appointment for a comprehensive, time-efficient rejuvenation. Paula will plan the sequence of treatments to maximise comfort and results.

Will the treatment look natural?

Natural results are always the priority. The goal is to add subtle volume that smooths the skin and softens the appearance of tendons and veins — not to overfill. Paula's technique focuses on restoring what has been lost, not adding more than was there.
